A programming framework is a set of programming tools that can be used to build well-structured and reliable software and systems.

What is a programming framework?

A programming framework provides ready-made components or solutions customized to speed up development. A framework can contain a library, but it is defined by the IoC (inversion of control) principle. In traditional programming, custom code calls a library to access reusable code. With IoC, the framework calls custom pieces of code as needed.  

The framework can include support programs, compilers, code libraries, toolkits and APIs for software development and system building. Open-source frameworks are continuously updated and improved.  

Whether the system is a house, a car, a theory or a mobile application, the concept of a framework is the same: it provides support and a basic “guide” to the structure being built.  

Why are frameworks used in software development?

The purpose of a framework is to help development by providing standardized, low-level functionality so that developers can focus on the elements that make a project unique. The use of high-quality, pre-tested functions increases software reliability, speeds up programming time and simplifies testing. With an active user community and continuous code improvements, the frameworks improve security and provide a support base.  

They allow programming frameworks to save both time and money in software development.  

What are the characteristics of a good framework?

There are many types of frameworks, and some are more popular than others. Developers often choose the frameworks they are most familiar with, but these frameworks may not be right for the job. Instead, consider the following characteristics of good frames when deciding which frame is right for the project:  

  • Functionality – choose a framework that provides the functionality needed for the project at hand, keeping in mind that every framework has its limits, and do not invest in a framework that does much more than your project will ever need.  
  • Consistency – a framework can help with consistency across large or distributed teams.  
  • Documentation – choose a framework that has well-documented code and provides training on deployment.  
  • Active community – frameworks are only as strong as the user community that supports them. Choose a framework that is well established and has an active user community. 

Types of programming frameworks

There are several different types of programming frameworks, each based on a specific programming language and specialized for its own purpose, whether it is a web application, a database, or a mobile application. On this basis, programming frameworks can be divided into three categories: web, front-end and back-end.  

Web frameworks

Web application frameworks (WAFs) or web frameworks (WFs) support the development of web applications using web services, web resources and web APIs. There are different web frameworks for both the front-end (how a web application looks) and the back end (how it works).  

Front-end frameworks

Front-end (client-side) frameworks provide the basic HTML, CSS and JavaScript templates and components for building the front-end of a website or web application.  

Angular  

What is Angular? Angular is an open-source web application framework based on TypeScript and maintained by the Google Angular team. Angular has a large ecosystem of tools and solutions, with a broad user community. Angular is ideally suited for highly customized web applications and progressive web applications (PWA).  

AngularJS refers to all 1.X versions of the framework that were previously JavaScript-based, and Angular is a complete rewrite using TypeScript in all versions 2 and above. AngularJS is used by more than 1.4 million websites.  

Angular Framework examples include PayPal, Upwork, Google and Nike.  

React JS  

What is React JS? React JS (React) is an open-source JavaScript framework for building user interfaces (UIs) and their components. While its narrow secrecy can be a limiting factor, React is easy to use, has a rich package ecosystem and is ideal for feature-rich applications. React is powered by Facebook and the wider community and is currently the most popular front-end framework downloaded in the last year.  

Examples of React JS include Facebook, Instagram, Uber, Netflix, and Airbnb.  

Vue JS  

What is Vue JS? Vue JS (Vue.js) is another JavaScript-based framework, but with more flexibility in using HTML and CSS and a Model-View-View-Model (MVVM) architecture. Vue is easy to learn and has a large community.  

Vue is currently the second most popular downloadable framework after React, but ahead of Angular.  

Examples of the Vue JS Framework include Trustpilot, Nintendo and Behance. 

Back-end frameworks

Back-end frameworks (server-side frameworks) provide generic functionality that can be compiled or built upon to aid development. The choice of framework depends on the programming language chosen for development and the target platform(s).  

Ruby on Rails  

What is Ruby on Rails? Ruby on Rails is an open-source framework written in the Ruby language. Ruby runs on Linux and is based on the Model-View-Controller (MVC) architecture. Ruby on Rails is secure and scalable, and benefits from large third-party libraries that speed up development. Nearly 17% of the top 10,000 websites use Ruby on Rails.  

Examples of the Ruby on Rails framework include Airbnb, Kickstarter, BaseCamp and CafePress.  

PHP frameworks (Laravel, CodeIgniter, CakePHP) 

What are PHP frameworks? PHP runs on a variety of platforms and is widely compatible, making it a popular back-end development language. The most popular PHP frameworks are Laravel, CodeIgniter and CakePHP.  

Laravel has an expressive and elegant syntax that speeds up coding and takes advantage of the powerful Blade model engine. CodeIgniter provides a lightweight framework with one of the smallest footprints, saving time with less coding effort. CakePHP is considered the “workhorse” of the three, leveraging a rack system and using conventions instead of configuration, saving time in development.  

Examples of PHP frameworks include MyRank (Laravel), Casio (CodeIgniter), Nissan (CodeIgniter) and 10FastFingers (CakePHP).  

Django 

What is Django? Django is an open-source framework for Python that encourages fast, scalable development and clean design. Django aims to provide everything you need, making it quick to assemble what you need from existing plugins. Django is popular in visual effects, games, and interactive services.  

Examples of the Django framework include Disqus, Instagram, Spotify, and YouTube.  

ASP.NET and ASP.NET Core  

What is ASP.NET? ASP.NET is an open source, cross-platform framework developed by Microsoft, and ASP.NET Core is a re-implemented modular web framework. ASP.NET supports web applications and services in .NET, C#, F# and Visual Basic programming languages.  

Examples of the ASP.NET framework include Microsoft, StackOverflow and GoDaddy.  

Node JS  

What is Node JS? Node.js is one of the most popular Javascript frameworks for backend development. Node.js is open source, meaning that the source code for Node.js is publicly available and maintained by contributors around the world.  

Node.js is platform independent, meaning that Node.js does not depend on any operating system software. It can run on Linux, macOS or Windows.  

Node.js is a JavaScript runtime environment. When you write JavaScript code in a text editor, the code cannot perform any task unless you execute (or run) it. You need a runtime environment to execute the code.
