Our three-day highly interactive course provides learners with a thorough understanding of the ‘Management of Risk: Creating and Protecting Value (M_o_R®4) framework. We provide informative and practical guidance so that each learner can apply the M_o_R®4 framework immediately with a view to realising true value. The framework is suitable for all organizations and industry sectors – private, public and not-for-profit.

M_o_R®4 is a key element of PeopleCert’s PRINCE2 portfolio and offers best practices to identify, assess, and control risks effectively - enhancing decision-making and risk resilience. This enables you to make informed decisions about risks that affect any of your strategic, portfolio, programme, project, product, and operational objectives.

We provide practical guidance for managing risk, showing how risk links to opportunity and the realization of benefits. M_o_R®4 is universally applicable and fully aligned with ISO standards.

Note: M_o_R®4 is a single-level certification targeted at Practitioner level only. There is no Foundation level qualification for M_o_R®4.

The course will cover in detail each of the key M_o_R®4 components and after completing the course, learners will be able to:

  • understand the purpose & principles of risk management
  • understand how risk management applies within and across the six perspectives
  • understand how people and culture influence effective risk management
  • understand how to apply the eight processes of risk management to create and protect value

No prerequisites are necessary for this course, although experience of working in an operational, programme, project, or product environment would be beneficial.

Prior to the course, learners will complete approximately five hours of pre-reading and associated activities. This will help set the context for the course and prepare you for the content to be covered.

This M_o_R®4 course includes a variety of hands-on exercises to ensure that the theory is embedded, and learners feel confident in the practical application of the tools and techniques that are part of the framework. Additional evening work will be required in the form of consolidation reading and practice examination questions. The evening work is an integral part of the course and delegates should expect to spend approximately 1.5 hours each evening on these activities.

The purpose and principles of risk management

We start by explaining what risk is and how risk management forms a key element of corporate governance and control.

M_o_R®4 principles enable effective risk management and always apply, irrespective of the objectives at risk, and the processes being applied. The eight principles are:

  • Provides clear guidance
  • Informs decision making
  • Facilitates continual improvement

M_o_R®4 perspectives

One of the strengths of M_o_R®4 is the integration of all six organizational perspectives, providing a joined-up approach that facilitates escalation, delegation and aggregation of risk. The six perspectives are:

How people and culture influence effective risk management

Implementing a positive risk culture provides staff with the skills to manage risk in a collaborative, open, and transparent way. We explain how to develop a supportive risk culture, engage stakeholders, build individual competence, and overcome decision bias.

M_o_R®4 processes

To create and protect value through risk management, each M_o_R®4 process has a unique purpose, objectives, techniques, support documents, and involvement of key roles. The eight processes apply across each perspective and collectively form the M_o_R®4 process cycle.

  • Define context and objectives

  • Assess combined risk profile
  • Plan responses

  • Monitor and report progress
  • Review and adapt

The course concludes by looking at how risk management can be aligned to the internal and external context of the organisation. How we achieve this will differ depending on the operating model the organization uses – functional or product.
