  • Working knowledge of Transact-SQL (equivalent knowledge to QATSQL and QATSQLPLUS).

Nice to have:

  • Working knowledge of relational databases.
  • Some experience with database design.

Target audience

The primary audience for this course is individuals who administer and maintain SQL Server databases. These individuals perform database administration and maintenance as their primary area of responsibility, or work in environments where databases play a key role in their primary job.

Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Design and implement SQL Instances.
  • Work with SQL databases.
  • Describe recovery models and backup strategies.
  • Backup SQL Server databases.
  • Restore SQL Server databases.
  • Authenticate and authorize users.
  • Assign server and database roles.
  • Authorize users to access resources.
  • Protect data with encryption and auditing.
  • Automate database management.
  • Configure security for the SQL Server agent.
  • Manage alerts and notifications.

Outline

The lessons covered include the considerations for installation, configuration of the tempdb database, default file locations, unattended installation using the GUI or command line, and upgrading SQL Server instances.

Working with SQL Databases

  • This module covers data storage in SQL and the processes involved in creating and managing databases, including an introduction to the concepts of data integrity and indexes.

Backup and Restore SQL Databases

  • This module covers all aspects of backing up and restoring databases.

SQL Server Authentication

  • This module covers the setup and maintenance of logins and users, at both the instance and database levels, along with linked server authentication.

Server and Database Roles

  • This module covers the creation and maintenance of security roles at the server and database level.

Database Object Security

  • This module covers security for objects at the database level, such as tables, views, stored procedures, and functions.

Data Security

  • This module covers additional methods of securing data, such as row and column security, data masking, auditing, and encryption.

Automating SQL Server management

  • This module covers the automation of administration with the SQL Server instance.

Exams and assessments

There are no formal exams included in this course. Participants will complete interactive labs and knowledge checks to reinforce learning outcomes.
