Cooling Professional

Access expert-led QA training live online, wherever you learn best.

Overview

The Cooling Professional course equips learners with the skills to design, optimise, and manage advanced cooling systems for modern data centres. As organisations continue to scale AI, Cloud, and Data workloads, efficient thermal management has become critical to operational resilience, sustainability, and energy performance. This course connects engineering theory with practical data centre applications, helping learners understand how cooling systems behave in real-world environments and how to engineer reliable, efficient solutions.

Learners will explore cooling fundamentals, psychrometrics, airflow management, free cooling strategies, Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), and emerging liquid cooling technologies. Through applied learning and scenario-based exercises, participants will gain the confidence to evaluate cooling approaches, troubleshoot performance challenges, and improve sustainability outcomes across data centre environments.

Prerequisites

Participants should have:

  • Experience working within data centre environments or critical infrastructure facilities.
  • A working understanding of mechanical engineering principles, thermodynamics, or HVAC systems.
  • Familiarity with data centre operations, environmental controls, or facilities management.
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency concepts and operational risk management is recommended.
  • An interest in sustainable infrastructure, cooling optimisation, and operational resilience.

Target audience

This course is designed for:

  • Mechanical engineers working in or transitioning into data centre environments.
  • Data centre professionals responsible for cooling, facilities, or environmental systems.
  • Infrastructure and operations teams supporting high-density compute environments.
  • Consultants and technical specialists focused on energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives.
  • Organisations seeking to improve operational resilience, cooling efficiency, and sustainability across mission-critical facilities.

Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the principles of heat transfer, humidity control, refrigeration, and fluid dynamics within data centre environments.
  • Assess the impact of cooling design decisions on operational resilience, sustainability, and energy consumption.
  • Apply psychrometric analysis and industry standards, including ASHRAE guidance, to cooling system design and optimisation.
  • Design and evaluate free cooling, air cooling, and zero-refrigeration strategies to improve efficiency.
  • Optimise airflow management using best-practice methodologies, controls, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) concepts.
  • Analyse how climate, load, and facility conditions influence Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).
  • Evaluate liquid cooling technologies and determine the most suitable solutions for different operational requirements.
  • Identify cooling risks, troubleshoot common issues, and improve long-term system reliability and sustainability.
